Southbank University Demolition Site Visit, February 2008

Following a meeting at South Bank University Vauxhall demolition site with some of the teachers from the schools involved with BSF Westminster, I have made a brief report of the visit.

The site meeting was organised by BYUK with Advanced Demolition who are currently working at the South Bank University site.  This followed a significant concern, from all Westminster schools involved in the project, with demolition and its affects, particularly those related to noise and dust.

Head teachers from Pimlico School and Saint Marylebone School, including a representative of our client from Westminster City Council (WCC), attended the visit.

The site is on the existing South Bank University where part of the land has been sold to a developer and the remainder is a new build site for a new university teaching area.

Purpose of site visit:

• To visually experience a live demolition site
• To answer any queries regarding the site, primarily the method of demolition proposed on each school
• To address concerns to do with noise and dust control
• To discuss and witness site safety

During the site visit:

• It was commented by WCC that dust was minimal around the site as this was controlled during the demolition works
• A working crusher was demonstrated on site where the noise and dust level was minimal
• Site safety and segregation was clear and identified
• The noise created from the use of pneumatic and hydraulic breakers was very high but demonstrated each type of equipment used on a demolition site
• Regular university activity was taking place as it was very close to the site.  However, demolition work was progressing on site daily with minimum disruption.
• A pulveriser was used on site to demonstrate its speed and noise level during demolition work
• Most types of equipment were in use on site which meant visitors could experience the average noise levels transmitted.  It was noted that the sound levels reduced significantly the further away we were from the ‘point of noise’.

Conclusion after the visit:

• Our visitors were well informed and impressed on the visit
• There was a clear understanding of how things work and are carried out on a demolition site
• Queries were answered on the spot by Advanced Demolition and BYUK which reassured those present.
